Cohousing opens the door to a wealth of good times, great friends, and amazing new experiences as part of an intentional community. However, it’s a big step for any household to make, and prospective new members need to spend time getting to know us and better understanding the details of what we collectively envision for our new cohousing community!

- The first step is to learn more about cohousing in general, and Acorn Creek Community specifically.
- Read our website, in particular, review our Vision and Values.
- Talk with a member of the Membership Team regarding Steps to Membership.

- Learn more about Cohousing: Educate yourself about cohousing!
- Read, for example, Creating Cohousing (Durrett and McCamant) and The Senior Cohousing Handbook (Durrett), both available at many libraries. The latter is the only book in English on this subject, and we consider it a must-read.
- Visit cohousing.org
- Read the New York Times article on Cohousing
- Read Time’s “Everyone Needs Someone Else: Why Americans of all ages are Coming Together in Intentional Communities“
- View Grace Kim’s TED Talk on Cohousing

- Assess your financial situation – Can you afford this step? Depending on the ultimate house you choose to build, buying property and building in Acorn Creek Community will likely cost members $400k-$550k. (NOTE: We are exploring implementing some Accessory Dwelling Units in our community in order to create some smaller homes that are more affordable. Zoning will allow them, but certainly at this point it is “to be determined.”)
- Talk to a realtor about the value of your current house if you have one.
- Talk to a mortgage broker/personal banker about your loan options. (Hint: use terminology of “house” rather than “cohousing.”
Information Sessions
Join us for a Virtual Open House on Saturday, May 4 or at our In Person Open House, Sunday, May 5.
Our goal is to hold Information Sessions as Explorers surface who want to know more about Acorn Creek Community. If you would like to chat with us and find out how to possibly start your journey as an Explorer, we encourage you to email us or use the contact form.
Hang Out With Us
We expect to use 2023 through early 2024 to meet those who are interested in exploring more about what it means to be part of the Acorn Creek Community.
It’s important to us to find time for explorers to get to know us, and us them. To this end, we’ll prioritize time for social times together, including some online sessions for those who aren’t local. As of April 2024, we have one lot (#3) available. Many relevant questions are addressed in our Overview and Updates page and Timeline document.
Your next step, if interested, is filling out the website form and starting this important time of mutual learning and exploration.
